Rewards for enduring mockery in Islam

Uncategorized

Enduring mockery, ridicule, or social isolation (Istihza’) with dignity and patience (Sabr) is one of the most highly praised virtues in Islam. The Quran addresses this trial extensively because it was the exact emotional and social environment faced by the Prophet Muhammad and the early Muslims. When you choose not to retaliate in kind, your restraint transforms a painful emotional wound into a source of immense spiritual elevation.

1. Direct Reassurance and Comfort from God

The Quran explicitly acknowledges the deep emotional pain that mockery causes to the heart. God does not dismiss this hurt; instead, He offers direct comfort, reminding the believer that they are not alone.

“And We already know that your breast is constrained (feels distressed) by what they say.”— Surah Al-Hijr (15:97)

Islamic scholars emphasize that when you feel the sting of ridicule and turn to God, that very distress becomes a vehicle for divine closeness. The Quranic prescription given immediately after acknowledging this pain is to engage in remembrance: “So exalt [Allah] with praise of your Lord and be among those who prostrate.” (15:98).

2. Expiation of Sins and Higher Ranks

Just like physical illness or financial loss, enduring emotional abuse and social mockery serves as a powerful means of spiritual cleansing.Every time a believer swallows their anger and bears a mocking comment for the sake of God, their minor sins are wiped away and their rank in Paradise is elevated. The Prophet Muhammad emphasized that a believer’s trials continue to cleanse them until they walk the earth with no sin left on them.

3. Divine Defense and the Return of the Mockery

One of the most profound promises in Islamic theology is that God takes it upon Himself to defend the believer. You do not need to fight dirty or drain your energy to defend your honor; the cosmos aligns to handle the account for you.

  • Angelic Defense: The Prophet Muhammad was once sitting with a companion when a man began to insult the companion. The companion remained silent, and the Prophet smiled. But when the companion eventually spoke up to defend himself, the Prophet stood up and left. He later explained: “An angel was descending from heaven defending your honor and replying to him on your behalf. But when you retaliated, the angel left and the devil took his place.” (Musnad Ahmad)
  • The Divine Guarantee: God states directly in the Quran to the Prophet: “Indeed, We are sufficient for you against the mockers.” (Surah Al-Hijr, 15:95).

4. The Reversal of Ranks on the Day of Judgment

The Quran explicitly describes a dramatic shift in reality that will take place on the Day of Judgment. Those who spent their worldly lives looking down on, laughing at, and mocking believers will find the tables completely turned.

Worldly RealityUltimate Eternal Reality
The mockers laugh, wink at one another, and ridicule the believers. The believers will be safely on adorned couches, looking on in honor.
The believers feel isolated or humiliated by public perception. The mockers are held fully accountable, realizing they threw away their own souls.

“So Today [the Day of Judgment], those who believed are laughing at the disbelievers, on adorned couches, observing.”— Surah Al-Mutaffifin (83:34-35)

How to Respond: The Prophetic Strategy

Islam doesn’t just promise rewards for passive suffering; it provides an active, highly psychological strategy to disarm mockers while protecting your own mental peace.

  • Respond with Beautiful Grace: The Quran advises, “Repel [evil] by that [deed] which is better; and thereupon the one whom between you and him is enmity [will become] as though he were a devoted friend.” (Surah Fussilat, 41:34). Responding to a smirk with a polite smile or a calm, dignified word completely robs the mocker of the reaction they crave.
  • Pass by with Dignity: The true servants of God are described as those who, “when they pass by ill speech, they pass by with dignity.” (Surah Al-Furqan, 25:72). Walking away isn’t weakness; it is a profound statement that their words are beneath your energy.
  • Remember the Ultimate Company: Every major Prophet—Noah, Abraham, Moses, Jesus, and Muhammad—was intensely mocked by their societies. When you are ridiculed for doing the right thing, you are actively walking the path of the elite of humanity.
